Mary (Sopko) Capo passed away at the age of 90 on August 28th. A lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, she spent her career as a loyal civil servant in the federal government, first with the Internal Revenue Service’s refund division during the 1950s and later with the U.S. Coast Guard until her retirement in 1996.
Mary was born in 1930 to Alex and Helen (Jaworska) Sopko, both immigrants from Ukraine. Along with her older brother Nicholas Sopko, Mary grew up in the Hill District. She graduated from Fifth Avenue Senior High in 1947.
Over the years, Mary’s passion for international travel took her around the globe. She ultimately visited dozens of countries spread across five continents. At her home in Mt. Lebanon, she could usually be found sewing on her porch or tending to her vegetable garden.
Mary was the loving mother of Maria (Michael) Olivo, Paul (Wendy) Capo and David (Debbie) Capo; grandmother of Natalie, Joseph, Alexander and Matthew.
A private memorial service will be held on a date to be determined.
